Travel and know the history of the Koman Lake

The Koman Lake has now become a tourist destination for both domestic and foreign visitors.

The lake  of Koman is actually a fake lake , is a reservoir on the Drin river, which was constructed between 1979 and 1988 near the village of Koman with a height of 115 meters. Beside Drin river, it is fed by Valbona and Shala rivers. It was created when the hydroelectric power station was built, in the 1980s on Drin River.

So, originally constructed as an artificial lake for supplying water to the Koman Hydroelectric Power Plant, in 2000 it started being used for water travel between different locations, connecting the city of Bajram Curri and Gjakova to other parts of the country.

Later, Koman Lake began to pique the curiosity of local and foreign tourists due to its natural beauty and historical and natural monuments along its shores. Along the entire lake, from Fierza to Koman, in a journey lasting less than three hours, visitors can be captivated by the breathtaking views. Traveling by ferry or a smaller boat provides an indescribable pleasure, and the villages in this area and the gorges of several rivers that flow into the lake are attractions in themselves.

Koman Lake is one of the most beautiful places in Albania, worth visiting for its unique waters and nature. Nowadays it is one of the 10 highest dams of this type in all Europe, with a height of 133 m and a length of 290 m that has created a lake with a total volume of about 500 million m3 of water.

Tourist activities on the waters of Koman Lake continue throughout the year, but the true tourist season starts from May to September, a period when the climate is most suitable. For nature and history enthusiasts, as well as those interested in the local culture and traditions, the rare guesthouses in the villages by the lake are used for accommodation.

Koman Lake is a big reservoir on the Drin River part of Northern Albania. It is surrounded by dense forested hills, vertical cliffs, deep gorges, and a narrow valley entirely embraced by the river. Besides the waters from the river of  Drin, it is fed by the Shala and Valbona rivers too.

The lake is also used for fishing. There are two port on both sides, which are Fierza and Koman but as a whole it offers many places that are worth to visit al least once.

The actually lake covers an area of 34 square kilometers, with a width of 400 meters. The narrow gorge, enclosed by vertical canyon walls, is over 50 meters deep. At this point the clear blue water is a beautiful and it should be enjoyed as a tourist.

The specific topography and also due to the hydrological condition, both have contributed to the formation of different habitats. There can be found very rare species like golden jackal, red fox, european badger, eurasian  otter, beech maten etc. Some kind of  rare birds are seen in this area, including kingisher, quail, woodpecker and blackheaded gull, etc.

Every day there is the Lake Koman Ferry that operates on lake from Koman to Fierze. This connect the city of Bajram Curri to the region of Tropoja. If the weather is good the whole journey lasts two and half hours and is full of foreign tourists.

The clear emerald water looks sometimes unreal, for more than 70 km meanders through mountains, in the narrowest place is surrounded by vertical canyon walls that is only 50 meters width (while usually is up to 400 meters). In the days when the weather is good the water shines a wonderful blue turquoise nd it makes you immediately want you to jump in it.

Commonly there are small boats that bring people and any kind of goods or food to the villages. Even the most remote villages that are not near the river can be reached only by water. So people bring everything home by boats and travel from village to the near city.

During the journey with Lake Koman Ferry, while still on boat, be careful and attentive, because you may spot around different kind of species or birds. You might be more than lucky this time, if you can take far away photos to them.
